Llantrisant
& Pontyclun Golf Club was founded in 1927 as a 9 hole course. Golf had
been played on Llantrisant Common as early as 1922 but due primarily to
adverse reaction to this new sport land was purchased at Talbot Green to
make a 9 hole course. The club purchased some adjoining land in 1950
and extended the course to 12 holes.
Some of the land purchased in 1950 had been
considered at the time to be of no practical value as most of it was
extremely wet with springs emanating from the nearby Graig mountain but
in the year 2000 (thanks to "Sportslot" funding and the skill of Dutch
drainage engineers) the course was successfully extended to 18holes of
5328 yards with a standard scratch of 66 & par 68.
The river had always been a feature of
the course marking the boundary of old 4th hole but with the advent of
18 holes 2 extra greens were able to use the river as a backdrop. The
course is both attractive and challenging as witnessed by the fact that
the course record stand at 1 under the Standard Scratch.
