Hallett Section

History

After the Second World War, many golf clubs needed to rebuild their membership. Wenvoe Castle Golf Club was no exception.  The golf club set up a 'Connies' section as a means of introducing the rules, etiquette and conduct expected both on and off the course to those new to golf.  It provided the opportunity for high handicap golfers to improve their game through competition at their own level.

The Hallett Cup Golf Society is named after Mr. Arthur Hallett who was a member at the Wenvoe Castle Golf Club until he died in the mid 1950's.

In 1948 matches started between Wenvoe Castle, Brynhill, Dinas Powys and Llantrisant.  In 1952 a league commenced, but after his death the league lapsed for a number of years until in 1957 when a good friend of Mr. Arthur Hallett, Mr Dennis Bonnell, revived the league and named it the Hallett Cup Golf Society.  In 1998 a milestone was reached when the Society's 50th Anniversary was celebrated.

Mr. Dennis Bonnell was both President and Secretary and ran the Society virtually single handed until his death in 1984.  Since then the Presidency has been tied to the post of President of the Wenvoe Castle Golf Club, in recognition of the Society's origins at the club.

At present the league has 42 member clubs.  The clubs are spread throughout the area, as far West as Pyle & Kenfig to Cradoc (Brecon) in the North and Forest Hills (Coleford) in the East.  The league comprises 6 divisions of 7 clubs.  The member golf clubs compete annually for the Hallett League Cup and the Jim Davies Knockout Cup.

Objectives of the Hallett Cup Golf Society

To familiarise new golfers with the Rules of the game, particularly those relating to etiquette.

To show by example that, in golf, standards of conduct are still considered important.

To teach players how to be competitive but still retain sportsmanship and good social relationships.

To enable people to play a variety of courses, with the accent on inter club relationships.

To help new golfers pass through the society and on to teams playing off lower handicaps. All players participating shall be at least 18 years of age, have a playing handicap of at least 18 and shall be in a position to verify their qualification for playing in any match.

Clubs where high handicaps are jealously guarded so that participation in the Hallett Cup Golf Society can be continued will in fact, fail to maintain the major aim of the Society as envisaged by Mr. Arthur Hallett (Founder).

Competitions of the Hallett Cup Golf Society

There are currently 42 golf clubs playing in the Hallett league and the knockout Hallett Cup.

League:

The clubs are drawn, at the previous seasons AGM, into 6 leagues of 7 clubs.  The 6 league winners, plus the 2 highest 2nd place point’s scorers, enter a knockout competition to establish the Hallett Cup Society Cup Champion club.

Cup:

A knockout cup competition is also run each year for all member clubs.
